Grandfather had an elephant
In India, Pattouma is of marriageable age. This is no easy feat when you are the daughter of wealthy Muslim dignitaries. For her mother, no match is worthy enough of her prestigious family, whose grandfather even owned an elephant. When her father is suddenly ruined, their comfort vanishes, and the suitors disappear. The young woman then meets Nisar Ahmad, a poor but cultured young man, with whom she falls in love.
