The 2004 Antibiotic Guide has been extensively revised compared to the 2000 edition. Treatment indications and antibiotic usage guidelines have been clarified in response to requests from many users of previous editions. Numerous references (consensus conferences, educational materials, etc.) are cited. This is a tremendous undertaking, and we must commend the primary authors, Olivier Baud and Florence Gourdon. This guide has thus continued to evolve, mirroring the policy of "appropriate antibiotic use" in healthcare facilities. The establishment of an Antibiotic Committee and designated contacts for each facility, specialty, or department has been mandated since the 2000 edition. For comments or suggestions, please contact us by email: [email protected] and [email protected]. The 2004 Antibiotic Guide will serve as a basis for department heads to make informed choices regarding antibiotics for their respective disciplines. In our view, the designated contacts and liaisons have several roles: they help to promote awareness and implementation of the Antibiotic Guidelines, and they participate in the establishment of specific rules. They are interested in all aspects of infection control; they are also involved in prevention and hygiene. They serve as a link between the Antibiotics Committee (as well as the Infection Control Committee and the Medical Devices Committee) and prescribers and healthcare professionals.
