Little known to the public, this book by Jean Markale attempts to demonstrate, through Celtic and even pre-Celtic myths, that the alignments of Carnac and those of Ireland, England, and Scotland are evidence of an ancient civilization. A civilization that preceded the Celts in these same lands, originating from what was once an extension of Heligoland. He dissects Plato's myth and seeks correspondences, stripping away all the superfluity of an epic novel and retaining only the essential. Does he get close to the truth? Certainly, the land between Brittany and the United Kingdom is partly submerged, and beneath it must lie vestiges of a civilization (the myth of Ys); certainly, on some cairns (like Gavrinis), symbols are engraved. Yes, there was a civilization before the Celts.
