Clinical semiology

Clinical semiology

Semiology is the science of signs. Grouped into syndromes, signs are the expressions of diseases, the essential elements for establishing a diagnosis. This work, completely revised and rewritten, is the successor to the seven editions of the Masson edition of *Abrégé de sémiologie médicale* (Abridged Treatise on Medical Semiology), by Maurice Bariéty and colleagues. In this introductory manual to the study of diseases, the authors refocus the field of semiology on clinical practice.

About the Book

Semiology is the science of signs. Grouped into syndromes, signs are the expressions of diseases, the essential elements for establishing a diagnosis. This work, completely revised and rewritten, is the successor to the seven editions of the Masson edition of *Abrégé de sémiologie médicale* (Abridged Treatise on Medical Semiology), by Maurice Bariéty and colleagues. In this introductory manual to the study of diseases, the authors refocus the field of semiology on clinical practice. They lead the reader beyond the simple description of observed phenomena to explain, as systematically as possible, the mechanisms of signs, integrate them into syndromes, and evoke their historical roots. Always bearing in mind the paramount importance of the relationship between patient and physician: "There are no beautiful patients, because all patients are beautiful" (page 23). The book is divided into five main parts: after presenting the Principles of Semiology, it addresses General Signs and Symptoms, then extensively develops the Semiology of Organs and Systems, followed by Specific Situations and Syndromes, and finally Quantitative Semiology. A simple and clear style, a two-color layout, and numerous diagrams and tables facilitate reading. Boxes highlight key points in each chapter. A particularly detailed index completes the work, making it an extremely convenient reference tool.
