Windows XP is a line of proprietary, multitasking operating systems developed by Microsoft for all types of computer use, including desktops, laptops, and media centers. The letters "XP" stand for experiment. Its codename was "Whistler," and it was eventually renamed Windows XP.
Windows XP is officially the successor to Windows Me and Windows 2000 and is the first home operating system developed by Microsoft based on the NT kernel and the Windows NT architecture. It corresponds to version 5.1 of Windows NT. Windows XP was released on October 25, 2001, and by January 2006, according to an estimate by a US statistical institute, nearly 400 million copies had been sold.
Sales of Windows XP ceased on June 30, 2008. (Except for netbooks and large enterprises.)
