The Windows 2000 Advanced Server version has the same features as the Server version, with the added ability to cluster multiple servers. This provides users with 24/7 service availability, meaning that if one server fails, the other server in the cluster automatically takes over. Similarly, if an application fails, it can be started on the other server. In addition to fault tolerance, clustering provides significant load balancing for network services such as web services. This version of Windows 2000 is more optimized than the Server version for processing large volumes of information (databases, transaction processing, decision support) thanks to the Enterprise Memory Architecture (EMA), which allows Windows 2000 to manage up to 8 GB of RAM on Intel systems. SMP features enable Windows 2000 Advanced Server to operate with up to eight processors.
