Windows XP Professional Edition x64 is the version for 64-bit architecture machines (AMD64 and Intel 64 or EM64T), officially released on April 25, 2005. At the outset, Microsoft decided to focus its 64-bit operating system strategy more on businesses than on individual users, as the technology was still relatively new. Therefore, Windows XP Pro x64 was only available as an OEM license.<\/p>\n

Microsoft announced the implementation of a license exchange system for Windows XP license holders who wished to upgrade to Windows XP 643. This offer ended on July 31, 2005 and allowed a Windows XP user (Professional edition only) to exchange it for a 64-bit version for a few euros.<\/p>\n

32-bit compatibility<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To ensure the execution of 32-bit programs, Windows XP 64 is capable of emulating a 32-bit processor. However, the migration will certainly not be very simple, and some 32-bit applications may encounter compatibility issues with Windows XP 64.<\/p>\n

Windows XP 64 uses a technology called WoW64 (Windows on Windows 64) to allow it to run 32-bit applications using the IA32 instruction set. This is achieved through the Wow64.dll, Wow64win.dll, and Wow64cpu.dll files.<\/p>\n
