Windows 7 (formerly known as Blackcomb and Vienna) is an operating system from Microsoft, released on October 22, 2009, and the successor to Windows Vista. Windows 7 was gradually replaced by Windows 8 starting on October 30, 2012. Support for Windows 7 RTM ended on April 9, 2013, while SP1 support ended in January 2015. This version of Windows builds upon the foundation of Windows Vista while introducing numerous improvements, including various changes to the interface and overall usability, a particular focus on seamless management of mobile devices, and a commitment to improving overall system performance (smoothness, speed of execution even on less powerful systems such as netbooks) compared to its predecessor.

By identifying this version by its version number (it is the seventh version of Windows), Microsoft is returning to a practice abandoned since Windows 3.11 and Windows NT 4.0. Until now, Windows versions were traditionally identified by their release year (Windows 95…) or by a specific name (Windows XP or Windows Vista). However, Windows 7 is based on the NT 6.1 kernel.

On April 8, 2010, the operating system exceeded the 10% market share mark in 5 months, while Windows Vista had to wait 16 months to reach the same score.
