This distribution has been based on Ubuntu since version 4, so it's a Debian derivative. It includes numerous bug fixes and around sixty new tools, not to mention other updated packages. A few tools dedicated to Arduino and Teensy are also included.
If you installed R2 on a hard drive, to upgrade to R3 you simply need to Follow these instructions. Alternatively, you can always boot from it using a Live CD.
